The Monarch Officially Strips Andrew of Royal Highness Title and Prince Title
Through a decisive action, the reigning monarch has formally stripped the former Duke of York of his Royal Highness attribute and his title of prince.
The changes were formalized by issuing royal documents under the Great Seal of the Realm, which were published in the Gazette.
The official notice stated: “The king has been graciously inclined by royal instruments under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to possess the designation of ‘HRH’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince of the realm’.”
A separate entry confirmed the stripping of the Duke of York from the roll of peerage, effective immediately.
The notice stated: “The king has been pleased to direct by warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to direct his government minister to cause the titleholder to be struck from the peerage roll.”
Context of the Royal Action
The decision follows mounting scrutiny over Andrew's links to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the posthumous publication of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.
Giuffre alleged that she was assaulted by the former prince after being trafficked by Epstein, allegations that Andrew has always strenuously denied.
Procedure of Title Removal
The king employed his royal prerogative—recognized authorities held by the sovereign—following discussions with government advisers, rather than through parliamentary means.
Royal instruments and royal warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to grant or revoke honors and styles.
Since the HRH style is granted by letters patent, it can be revoked through the same instrument.
Further Measures and Support
After the initial announcement, the senior legal official was instructed to draft the required paperwork for the title removals.
This action also involves Mountbatten Windsor giving up his lease on Royal Lodge, a 30-room Crown Estate property where he has resided for twenty years.
The government endorsed the monarch's move.
Retained Honor
Despite the loss of titles, it was announced that Andrew will retain his South Atlantic medal, granted for his role as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
