Diving into a Unusual Steam Demo: Controlling a Poop on a Quest to Reach the Toilet

Steam Next Fest is in full swing, and enthusiasts have found plenty of entertaining creations from small studios. Yet, one catches the eye for its unconventional concept. Named Unko Technica, this retro-inspired jumping adventure includes a hero that is actually a turd striving to navigate to a commode. In case you're wondering, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."

How you interact is easy to grasp: you only need a single jump button. Across numerous levels, battle boss fights and unlock a store to acquire skins for your dung hero.

Plan your jumps carefully, since one error requires beginning again. Jump off floating orbs to propel the poop to new heights, traverse fragile ledges, and activate triggers to reveal hidden paths. Collect UN-KOINS for buying challenging levels in which the action gets crazy.

Graphically, the demo shows off vibrant stages and an amazing music score. The retro art featuring moving abstract forms could recall gamers of classic titles like Earthbound.

While it's difficult to think of other games where you play as a coiled turd, interactive entertainment have long featured toilet humor. For instance, in Death Stranding, players make throwables from character waste. Titles such as Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved utilize feces as plant food. And of course, such content is present extensively in the South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.

Despite its silly concept, Unko Technica has already earned notable recognition, such as winning at a major publisher's indie contest in 2023. A playable preview is ready at present on Steam, with the full game scheduled to debut on PC on November 19.
