Damaged Wire Led to Portuguese Capital Inclined Railway Accident, Probe Finds

This tragic cable car crash in Portugal's capital that cost sixteen lives in the start of the ninth month was attributed to a faulty line, per the formal probe released on the start of the week.

This investigation has urged that the city's comparable vehicles stay non-operational until their safety can be fully assured.

Specifics of the Devastating Accident

This crash happened when the old Elevador da Glória went off track and smashed into a structure, shocking the city and raising grave fears about the security of historic tourist attractions.

Portugal's transport safety authority (GPIAAF) stated that a line joining two cabins had detached just before the crash on the third of September.

Initial Findings

The early document stated that the line did not meet the mandatory standards set by the urban public transport company.

The wire failed to comply with the requirements mandated to be employed for the Glória funicular.

The comprehensive analysis also advised that other inclined railways in the capital must remain non-operational until authorities can verify they have sufficient brakes capable of stopping the cabins in the event of a line snap.

Victims and Injuries

Among the 16 casualties, eleven were foreign nationals, featuring 3 British nationals, 2 Korean nationals, two citizens of Canada, a Frenchwoman, one citizen of Switzerland, one US national, and one citizen of Ukraine.

The crash also hurt approximately 20 individuals, comprising three British citizens.

Among the Portuguese victims included four workers from the same welfare organization, whose premises are situated at the summit of the steep street used by the funicular.

Operational Details

This Glória funicular was inaugurated in 1885, employing a method of counterweights to move its 2 cars along its 265-metre path ascending and descending a precipitous hill.

As per the bureau, a standard inspection on the day of the accident identified no issues with the wire that subsequently broke.

The investigators also reported that the driver had engaged the vehicle's stopping mechanism, but they were unable to prevent the carriage without the assistance of the balancing mechanism.

This entire event unfolded in just under a minute, according to the probe.

Next Measures

This agency is anticipated to issue a definitive document with safety suggestions within the following twelve months, though an interim report may deliver further information on the status of the investigation.
