An Australian national is counted among the 115 individuals wounded in a fire that tore through a crowded bar during a end-of-year festivities in the mountain resort of Crans Montana, which resulted in 40 fatalities.

Government Statement on Australian Injured Person

A senior Australian government minister, Chris Bowen, announced this morning that an Australian citizen was among the injured and was getting both hospital treatment and embassy aid.

“This is undoubtedly a horrific, horrific tragedy and undoubtedly all Australians offer their thoughts to the nation of Switzerland, the people involved,” the minister said during ABC RN radio.

He continued, “I am able to verify an Australian was hurt and is receiving medical care and the family is receiving support, assistance from the Australian embassy. Further details cannot be shared for privacy reasons. The individual's name is being withheld at this point.”

Department Assistance and Continued Efforts

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade verified early Friday it was giving consular help to the injured person and their family.

A department representative said: “DFAT is currently offering consular support to the family members of an Australian citizen that has been injured and is receiving medical care following the fire. Because of our privacy commitments we are prevented from commenting further.”

The spokesperson added, “DFAT is conducting urgent checks with local authorities to ascertain if any other Australians were impacted. We are prepared to offer diplomatic support.”

Nature of Consular Assistance

Such support may involve:

  • Reaching out to or attending hospitals in the area.
  • Liaising with local authorities.
  • Provision of lists of medical providers.
  • Assistance communicating with family members.

Details of the Tragic Fire

Swiss police said the inferno ignited at approximately 1:30 am, local time, in a nightclub frequented by visitors called the Constellation, which is found in the downtown area of the alpine resort.

Recordings of the tragedy reveals fierce orange flames from inside the first-floor establishment. Cries and blaring music are audible, and multiple persons were witnessed lying outside the building.

Some people who died in the inferno remain unidentified yet due to the extent of their injuries.

Cause and the Blaze's Cause

Swiss police said the fire was not deliberately set for the inferno, which is considered to be the result of an accident.

Advice for Worried Relatives

Australians concerned about loved ones potentially affected in the fire were advised to call the Australian diplomatic emergency hotline on the number 1300 555 135.
