2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. However, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are serious amphibian adventures.
A Data-Driven Dive
To grasp this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is also apparent elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the trend in gaming seems particularly strong.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Honestly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs offer natural appealing traits for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities enable a host of unique mechanics.
Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year yet.
Should these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be entering a genuine croaking cultural moment.
